Shav is a crippled little donkey that everyone except a little Jewish girl named Phoebe thinks is worthless, which makes poor Shav feel sad. He longs to be big and strong like other donkeys. Then a couple named Mary and Joseph came to the farm owned by Phoebe's father, Eli. They ask to use one of Farmer Eli's donkeys to take them into Bethlehem. Mary is about to give birth, and the journey would be too hard for her to make on foot. All of Eli's strong donkeys are doing other work that day, so young Phoebe convinces her father to let the young couple take lame little Shav. Shav becomes an important part of that very first Christmas, and his life is changed forever.
